As part of an interview with photographer Chantel King, repsychl shares a list of black women in the beauty and fashion world.

Being a black female in the photography industry, King has discussed the lack of representation for people like her behind and in front of the camera. Her portfolio is a reflection of those in society whom she wants to see.

1. Charlotte Mensah, Hair Artist

A British-Ghanaian hairstylist, Charlotte Mensah has been in the industry for over fifteen years. The beauty industry’s authority on natural, textured, and mixed heritage Afro hair, she is the founder and creative director of Hair Lounge, on London’s Portobello Road. Her induction into the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame made her the first black woman to be inducted.

2. Ajok Madel, Model

Model Ajok has worked with brands such as Valentino, Gautier, and Balcenciaga. In 2021, Model of the Year nominated her as a Breakout Star.

3. Nadine Ijewere, Photographer

London-born photographer Nadine Ijewere specialises in fashion and portraiture. She is known for celebrating the diversity of her models, many of whom do not conform to stereotypical fashion industry standards.

4. Candice Brathwaite, News Personality

Candice Brathwaite is an award-winning author, journalist, and presenter. Through the Internet, she has shown how young black families “not only survive, but thrive”. In her newest book, ‘Sista Sister’ (shown below), she reveals lessons she wished she had been taught growing up.

5. Funmi Fetto

Funmi Fetto is Contributing Editor at British Vogue, Beauty Director at Observer Magazine, and author of ‘PALETTE: The Beauty Bible for Women of Colour’.
